Tiapito Ophioglossum reticulatum

Fern with erect, fleshy rhizome with thick and prolific roots. Petiole 3.5 – 1.1 cm. Sterile frond, heart-shaped or truncated at the base, more or less acuminate or sometimes rounded at the apex, 1.5 – 4.5 x 1.5 – 4 cm. Fertile part with thin peduncle, 16 cm and thin spike of 2.5 cm.

Importance

It was assigned healing properties, especially for stomach pain and colic, and was frequently used to ensure the healthy growth of children. It is still occasionally used on the island.

Propagation

Due to the difficulty in reproducing it, the Mataveri Otai Nursery only propagates it from sporadic collections.

Ecology

From 10 meters high on the seashore to more than 300 meters in gently sloping rocky areas. The associated species are Ophioglossum lusitanicum subsp. coriaceum, Sporobolus indicus, Microlepia strigosa and Axonopus paschalis.

Conservation

Classified as VULNERABLE by the Chilean Ministry of the Environment (Wild Species Classification Regulations).

Distribution

Tropical and subtropical regions of South America, Asia and Polynesia. Indigenous in Rapa Nui.
