Join the MANAVAI Conservation Network
Under the current climate change scenario, the conservation of our last native and endemic flora requires the participation of everyone.
This demonstration garden acts as a reserve for native and endemic plant species that are propagated to deliver them to the community through the “Manavai Conservation Network.”Red de Conservación Manavai«.
You can be part of this network as a "volunteer for 1 day", "regular volunteer" or simply taking a guided tour that may spark your interest.
The “MANAVAI Conservation Network”
This network was created as part of the project to promote community-based participatory conservation of native plants on Easter Island. This is carried out through a series of lines of action:
Community involvement: It is essential to involve the local community in all stages of the conservation process. Guided tours of the demonstration garden, workshops, and field activities are considered to train local residents in seed collection, cuttings, and propagation techniques.
Promotion of community gardens: The network promotes the creation and maintenance of small community gardens in schools, homes, public institutions, hotels, etc., that imitate the MANAVAI model where native plants can be grown to conserve, multiply and share them.
Continuous monitoring and evaluation: It is considered establishing monitoring programs with students to evaluate the success of conservation and restoration activities. This involves conducting regular plant inventories, monitoring the growth of reintroduced populations, and assessing the health of ecosystems.
Education and awareness: Environmental education and public awareness are key to ensuring the long-term success of the network. Therefore, events, social media campaigns and educational materials will be developed periodically to keep the community informed and engaged about conservation efforts and the environmental challenges facing Easter Island. This website will continue to grow to expand, make transparent and improve the operation and purposes of the network.
Promotion of regenerative tourism: The conservation of native plants can be integrated into sustainable tourism initiatives that promote respect for the environment and local culture. This includes guided tours (with or without support from CONAF personnel) and environmental volunteer programs where tourists can serve for a few hours or days in conservation tasks of a varied nature, both in the field and in the office.
The "MANAVAI Conservation Network" is a key tool of the demonstration garden through which this conservation space is transformed into an active agent for promoting the conservation of the native and endemic flora of Rapa Nui.
